The O’Neill Pipe Band, Clontibret, celebrated their 40th anniversary in great style with a major international pipe band parade in Monaghan Town on Saturday last, 6th October.
The O’Neills were joined in the unique celebrations by 48 member of the New Hampshire Pipes and Drums band from the USA and the famed Tayuela De Mercer Pipe from Madrid, who took part in the Monaghan St. Patrick’s Day parade in 2006.
Other participating bands included The Killyvargue Pipe Band, Scotshouse, The Bantry Pipe Band, Aughnacloy, The Lisnagrieve Pipe Band, The Aughnamullen Pipe Band, The Corduff Pipe Band and The Clontibret Pipe Band.
The bands gathered at the Monaghan Harps Complex before parading through the streets of the town to the Diamond where a huge crowd of spectators witnessed the largest ever gathering of pipers and drummers to assemble and perform together in Monaghan.
A large crowd attended a special Mass to mark the occassion in St. Mary’s Church, Clontibret, on Thursday night last. Members and supporters of the Tayuela De Mercer Band attended a traditional music session sponsored by Regina Keer in M&M’s Irish Cottage on Friday night.
On Saturday morning the visitors from the USA, which totaled 91 people, enjoyed a visit to the Clontibret Wildlife Centre which is owned by popular local man and founder member of The O’Neill Pipe Band, Peadar Morgan.
Following the parade the bands attended a monster Ceili in Derrynoose Social Club which was enjoyed by all.
